The Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) 2024 schedule and information booklet were published on May 6, 2024, on the official TNEA website, tneaonline.org. The Department of Technical Education (DoTE) in Tamil Nadu has made the TNEA 2024 application form available online, with the registration period open from May 6, 2024, to June 6, 2024. Interested candidates must complete their registration before the deadline to participate in the admission process.
Admission Process
TNEA facilitates BE/BTech admissions in Tamil Nadu through an online counselling process. Unlike many states, Tamil Nadu does not conduct a state-level entrance exam for engineering admissions. Instead, candidates are selected based on their Class 12 marks in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, which are scaled to a total of 200 points (Mathematics: 100, Physics: 50, Chemistry: 50).
Key Steps in the TNEA 2024 Process
- Registration: Candidates must register on the official TNEA website within the specified dates.
- Random Number Assignment: After registration, candidates are assigned random numbers.
- Certificate Verification: Submitted documents are verified for eligibility.
- Rank List Publication: A rank list is generated based on the scaled Class 12 marks.
- Counselling: Conducted in four rounds, the counselling process includes:
- Choice Filling: Candidates select their preferred colleges and courses.
- Allotment: Seats are allotted based on the candidate’s rank and preferences.
- Confirmation: Candidates confirm their allotted seats.
- Reporting: Candidates report to the assigned colleges or TNEA Facilitation Centers (TFCs) and pay the required fees.
Eligibility and Participation
Candidates who have passed or are appearing for their Class 12 exams are eligible to apply for TNEA counselling. The counselling process is open to Indian Nationals who wish to secure admission to Government and Government-Aided Engineering Colleges, University Departments, Constituent Colleges of Anna University, Annamalai University, and seats surrendered by Self-Financing Engineering Colleges in Tamil Nadu.

TNEA 2024 Random Numbers
TNEA random numbers are issued to registered candidates for tie-breaking purposes when preparing the merit list. Each candidate receives a unique 10-digit random number. To view their assigned random number, candidates must log in using their ID/email ID and password. Additionally, the conducting body informs all registered candidates of their random number via SMS.
TNEA 2024 Rank List Selection Criteria
The selection process for TNEA 2024 includes the following steps:
Step 1: Scores Reduction
The selection of candidates is based on the marks obtained in the prescribed subjects, reduced to a total of 200 points (Mathematics: 100, Physics + Chemistry: 100) in the qualifying examination.
Step 2: Normalization of Scores
The marks obtained by students in relevant subjects in the qualifying examination conducted by various boards or authorities are equated with the marks obtained by students in the same subjects in the State Board of Tamil Nadu’s qualifying examination using a normalization method.
TNEA 2024 Merit List
A merit list is prepared based on the normalized marks in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, scaled to a total of 200 points (Mathematics: 100, Physics: 50, Chemistry: 50). The merit list integrates qualified students from different boards into a common list. The overall rank and community rank are published on the official TNEA website. A week is allocated for addressing any grievances after the rank list publication. In case of grievances, applicants can contact the office of the Secretary, TNEA at the Directorate of Technical Education, Chennai 600 025.
Tie-Breaking in Merit List
If multiple candidates have the same marks in the common merit list, inter-se merit is determined in the following order of priority:
- Percentage of marks in Mathematics
- Percentage of marks in Physics
- Percentage of marks in the optional subject
- Percentage of total marks in the 12th Standard Examination
- Percentage of total marks in the 10th Standard Examination
- Date of birth (preference given to older candidates)
- Random number assigned (higher value given preference)
TNEA 2024 Counselling Process
TNEA counselling groups applicants based on their ranks, with each group participating in counselling according to their turn. TNEA 2024 counselling consists of four rounds. Applicants must log in to the TNEA portal using their user ID and password (same as used during registration) to perform various activities in each round. The procedure for each round is as follows:
1. Publication of Eligible Applicants
The list of eligible applicants for a particular round is published on the TNEA portal.
2. Rounds of Counselling
Counselling is conducted online in four rounds as per the schedule. Candidates participate in corresponding rounds based on their rank.
3. Stages of Counselling
Each round has four stages:
- Choice Filling
- Allotment
- Confirmation of Allotment
- Reporting to College/TFC and Payment of Fees
4. Process Followed in Each Round
- Choice Filling: Candidates have three days to fill in their choices of colleges and branches based on their preferences. The order of choices is crucial. Candidates can fill in any number of choices.
- Seat Allotment: Allotment is based on the preferential order of choices, rank, and available seat matrix.
- Choice Confirmation: If allotted a seat, candidates must confirm it within two days. Failure to confirm will result in the candidate being moved to the next round.
- Reporting and Confirmation of Seat:
- Candidates satisfied with the allotted seat and opting for “Accept and Join” must download the allotment order, report to the college within seven days, and complete the admission procedure by paying the necessary fees.
- Candidates opting for “Accept and Upward” receive tentative allotment orders. They must report to the nearest TFC, pay the tuition fees, and submit their original certificates to hold the current seat. Failure to report or pay fees results in losing the allotted seat and disqualification from further counselling rounds.
For more detailed information, visit the official TNEA website at tneaonline.org.
TNEA 2024 Counselling Choice Confirmation Options
Once candidates are allotted seats in TNEA counselling, they have six options for confirming their choices:
- Accept and Join
- Candidates satisfied with their allotted seat can download the provisional allotment order and report to the college on the specified date for admission. Failure to report to the college will result in losing the allotted seat and disqualification from further rounds.
- Accept and Upward
- Candidates satisfied with their allotted seat but wishing for a higher preference can wait for the upward movement. If no better choice is available, the candidate retains the previously allotted seat.
- Decline and Upward
- Candidates not satisfied with the allotted seat can decline it but still wait for a higher preference. If no higher preference is available, the candidate will move to the next round.
- Decline and Move to the Next Round
- Candidates not satisfied with the allotted seat and not wishing to wait for an upward movement can participate in the next round.
- Decline and Quit
- Candidates not satisfied with the allotted seat and not wishing to participate in subsequent rounds can quit the process.
- Upward or Move to the Next Round
- Candidates not allotted any seat based on their choices can opt for upward movement. If no seat is available during upward movement, the candidate will move to the next round.
